The establishment clause to the first amendment states that the government can not support a religion or religious enity. In the school voucher case the parent makes the choice to support the religious school, the government does not dictate what school you go to. Therefore there is no violation.

  2. optimo75 Says:

No on vouchers, this documentary is about 1 girl. Taxpayers have been funding public schools that are failing. If these schools are performing poorly then we are wasting money on public schools.

  3. jbranstetter04 Says:

The best comparison is our colleges and universities. We have both public and private ones, and the government gives out grants and loans to attend the one of your choice, whether it be public or private, and look how great they both are. It’s called as you stated, competition.

  4. ac51979 Says:

We could fix public schools; but at a high cost. A voucher program can do it much faster, much cheaper, and much more effecttively. A voucher programs also puts private schools and public schools in direct competition, guarenting students will have a great education. Even with greatly increased public education funding, the money would just go to waste with no incentive to improve.

  5. mashed107 Says:

@novoneiro Public schools can not be fixed. It is a monopoly, with no accountability because it’s ran by incompetent bureaucrats in D.C. Public schools needs to be ran by local governments, so that it’s accountable to the people going to those schools, rather than political elites who only care when there’s an election. Even better, an entire free-market solution where failings schools go bankrupt and successful schools, that provide quality education, command a larger market share would be best

  6. SuaveSavant Says:

“Why not just fix the public schools instead?”

That’s been the directive all this time, but it didn’t work. You can’t “fix” public schools when the “public” aspect is the problem. The monopoly is the problem.

  7. jbranstetter04 Says:

They really don’t get it, do they? It’s like talking to a brick wall. We need a conservative leader to get all over this issue. This issue is like black and white. Conservatives want to give the poor more choice and power, while the liberals want to keep them in their place. I just don’t understand why the conservative leaders are not all over this issue.

  8. Darkwizzrobe Says:

@jbranstetter04 Yes that seems to be the only solution these libs can come up with.

  9. jbranstetter04 Says:

Just for your information, government grants and loans for colleges can be used for any college of your choice, and it is perfectly constitutional (they are not favoring one school over another, read your Constitution). The point of this video is that the public school in DC costs over $14,000 per pupil while the private one costs less than half and does a better job at educating. So how do you propose to fix the public schools? Will you throw more money at them?

  10. novoneiro Says:

Private tax money being used to support religious schools. Sounds unconstitutional to me. Also, tax payer money used for private schooling? Why not just fix the public schools instead? Wouldnt that also be more “fiscally responsible.”?

  11. mikzyspitlik Says:

He said democratic “VIEWS” not “VALUES” lol

  12. mikzyspitlik Says:

When I was in the public education system I realized that most of the strain is on the teachers. Teachers get yelled at if too many of their students are failing so they lower the standards for the entire class so everyone can pass. After awhile you get shitty schools that reward students with a “A” for just showing up to class. I say, put the pressure more on the families and give them an opportunity to send their kids to school wherever they want to go. Fuck the teacher’s union.

  13. mikzyspitlik Says:

Absolutely agree. After I came to college and noticed the big difference between the way school works here and the way it worked there I realized that my high school teachers had wasted my time. Didn’t really get much of the politics stuff in high school, but we all have our agendas.

  14. jbranstetter04 Says:

When we end the wars, if we ever do, then that money will have to go towards our annual deficit which is out of control. If this deficit spending is not stopped, then our children will have no future except one of being slaves.

Every kid didn’t get a voucher because it was an experiment; the vouchers were applied for by the parents.

Clarence Thomas is an example of a kid growing up in severe poverty, and yet with hard work and striving to become educated, he is now a Supreme Court Justice.

  15. ragordon168 Says:

    then fix the system.

pull out of the war and spend all those millions on education to improve the public school system.

did every single kid get to have a voucher? doubt it.

did every kid in a family get one?

send a poor kid to a fancy school and they still have to live in a poor area and will probably not go to college or get a high paying job. they will be stuck in some poor paying job just trying to keep the family afloat.

only by improving the whole will it work

  16. jbranstetter04 Says:

Wrap your brain around this. It costs $14,000 per pupil to send a kid to a public school (taxpayer money). Instead of sending them to the public school, they are given a voucher of $7,000 to go to a private school of their choice. You got it now? It costs the taxpayer half the money to send kids to private schools. Does this not tell you that our public schools are messed up and that it has nothing to do with the amount of money that they receive?

  17. ragordon168 Says:

a voucher that allows one kid from a poor area access to a high end school, what a shite idea no wonder they binned it.

instead of paying for one kid why not spend the money improving the poorer schools?

scrap the amount of money wasted every year on useless crap and pay for education. or is that to liberal for you?

  18. its1986davidbowie Says:

yeah how dare they preach democratic values… We need to be a fascist state, white christian creationism only!… what the hell do they think this is a democracy or something?

  19. kkem444 Says:

We could all pick out grammatical errors in your statement too…..

but this is the internet so “who give a fuck”

  20. Republican4U2Envy Says:

Public schools are an absolute joke. All they do is preach their democratic views and half ass their teaching. No wonder our test scores are so much lower compared to other countries.

  21. StoogeWatcher Says:

THe same liberal politicians who are denying this family a chance to succeed are the ones who send THEIR kids to private schools. I would like to see how rich liberal kids would survive in the very public schools their parents defend.

  22. chernmax Says:

Well shoot, If a Pell Grant is worth $7,500 dollars to put a kid in a private school where they are actually getting an education and a public school gets $15,000 to teach in a failing school, what exactly was the logic to kill the program unless it was a special interest thing??? Idiot Government working for YOU!!!

  23. XxXxINSIGHTxXxX Says:

I noticed that in our country and n the world as a whole. I can easily find a big hearted whitey who cares for many.

  24. tishNDC Says:

OK so thats Mercedes what about the rest of the kids in the DC area, what about the parents of the kids that have tried to get into these programs, is it only fair to fight for them what about the rest of the children dont they need a future, they still have to attend these schools, they still have to walk through these neighborhoods, its only fair to create a system that can help them all not a select few

  25. peeairoh Says:

Good for Ingrid and her children.
