Article by Drew

Democratic Party traces its origin to the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1793. Democratic Party was formed from the faction of Republicans, Democrats, led by Andrew Jackson. After the defeat in the historic election of 1824 despite the majority of the votes, Andrew Jackson in September to build a political coalition strong enough to defeat John Quincy Adams in the election 1828. I built the coalition that was at the heart of the Democratic Party later.

In 1850, after the collapse of the Whig Party, the south wing of the Democratic Party is increasingly linked to the continuation and expansion of slavery in the new opposition party, the Republicans. Democrats in the northern states opposed this new trend, and the 1860 nominating convention the party split and nominated two candidates (see U.S. presidential election, 1860). Therefore, the Democrats fell in defeat – part of a chain of events leading to civil war. After the war, Democrats are the party to Shattered, but eventually gathered enough support to elect reform candidate Grover Cleveland to two terms.

In 1896, the Democrats chose William Jennings Bryan over Cleveland as their candidate, who then lost to William McKinley. Democrats not to renew the presidency until Woodrow Wilson guided it to a progressive platform in 1912. The Republicans again took the initiative in 1920 by the protection of non-interference regulatory policies. Since 1929 the stock market crash and Great Depression that followed the scene for -interventionist government and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) won a landslide election in 1932 campaign platform of “relief, recovery and reform. The political pendulum turned away from Democrats in the election for Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1980. In 1980, the country is ready for a change in political vision after ten years of poor economic performance and shame several abroad, including the Vietnam War and the Iran hostage crisis at the end of the Carter presidency. Surfing the Basque Reagan, the Republican Party successfully positioned itself as the party of national strength, winning 34 seats in the House of Representatives and to take control of the Senate for the first time since 1955.

Democratic Leadership Council, organized by elected Democratic leaders in recent years has worked in the position of a party to a centrist position. He always recycles a powerful base of supporters left center, however, that as Republicans, Democrats are generally of all countries in the universal appeal of most opponents of the Republicans. This includes organized labor, educators, environmentalist, gay, pro-choice, and other opponents of social conservatism practiced by many Republicans.

In 1990, the new party even strengthened by providing a roadmap to success in economic growth. Directed by Bill Clinton, the Democrats championed a balanced federal budget and work through a strong growth economy. unions, which are steadily losing members since 1960, considers that they also have lost political influence to within the Democratic Party: Hillary Clinton signed a Free Trade Agreement NAFTA with Canada and Mexico over the strong opposition of trade unions

During the 2000 presidential elections the party’s left wing broke just below the candidacy of Al Gore. Some former Democratic voters felt the country had become too centerist and away from traditional liberal way. Left open the Green Party candidate Ralph Nader, in turn, managed to take many votes from Al Gore in many traditionally liberal country, an event that is often cited as the main reason for the defeat of Al Gore.

On September 11, 2001 terrorist against the Democrats face a new political headache as the focus of the nation has now changed to issues of national security and homeland defense, with him against the Democrats for positioning war in Iraq and a supporter of the less aggressive policy.
